A casino bonus is a loan of playing time with conditions attached. Understanding the conditions is the difference between a good deal and an expensive one.
The four numbers that matter
Wagering requirement. The multiple of the bonus (or bonus plus deposit) you must bet before withdrawing. "35x bonus" on a $100 bonus means $3,500 of bets. "35x deposit + bonus" on a $100 deposit and $100 bonus means $7,000 — twice as much. Always check which base the multiplier applies to.
Game contribution. Not every game counts fully. Slots typically contribute 100%; table games and live dealer often 10% or less, and some games are excluded entirely. Betting $100 on blackjack at 10% contribution only clears $10 of wagering.
Maximum bet. Most bonuses cap bet size while wagering — commonly $5 per spin. Exceeding it can void the bonus and any winnings.
Expiry. The time you have to complete wagering, often 7 to 30 days. Unfinished wagering forfeits the bonus.
A worked example
Two casinos offer a 100% match up to $200:
- Casino A: 30x bonus, 100% slot contribution, 30 days.
- Casino B: 20x deposit + bonus, 100% slot contribution, 7 days.
With a $200 deposit at each, A requires $6,000 of wagering and B requires $8,000. A also gives you four times as long. Despite identical headlines, A is clearly better.
Expected cost of wagering
At a 4% average house edge on slots, wagering $6,000 has an expected cost of $240 — more than the $200 bonus. That's typical. The bonus does not create positive expectation; it extends how long a bankroll lasts. Think of it as buying more spins at a discount, not as free money.
Crypto bonus quirks
Crypto casinos increasingly use "unlockable" bonuses that release in small increments as you wager, rather than a lump sum with a wagering requirement. The economics are similar, but the amount you actually receive depends on how much you play. Check the unlock rate.
When to skip the bonus
If you play low-contribution games, prefer to withdraw quickly, or bet in larger amounts than the max-bet rule allows, decline the bonus. Most casinos let you opt out at deposit; some require a message to support.
