The rules that matter
Before sitting down, check the table's rules. Each of these affects the edge:
- Blackjack payout: 3:2 is standard. 6:5 adds about 1.4% to the house edge — avoid it.
- Dealer on soft 17: standing is better for you than hitting (about 0.2%).
- Doubling after split: allowed is better (about 0.14%).
- Number of decks: fewer is better, though the effect is small online.
- Surrender: late surrender helps slightly where offered.
Basic strategy in brief

Hard hands
- 8 or less: always hit.
- 9: double against 3–6, otherwise hit.
- 10: double against 2–9, otherwise hit.
- 11: double against 2–10; against an ace, hit (or double if dealer stands on soft 17).
- 12: stand against 4–6, otherwise hit.
- 13–16: stand against 2–6, otherwise hit.
- 17 or more: always stand.
Soft hands (with an ace counted as 11)
- Soft 13–14: double against 5–6, otherwise hit.
- Soft 15–16: double against 4–6, otherwise hit.
- Soft 17: double against 3–6, otherwise hit.
- Soft 18: double against 2–6, stand against 7–8, hit against 9–ace.
- Soft 19 or more: stand.
Pairs
- Always split aces and eights.
- Never split tens or fives.
- Split 2s, 3s and 7s against 2–7; 6s against 2–6; 9s against 2–6 and 8–9.

Why counting doesn't work online
RNG blackjack shuffles after every hand, so there is no shoe to track. Live dealer tables use physical cards but typically cut deep into the shoe or use continuous shufflers, and betting spreads are limited. Basic strategy is the ceiling for online play.
Bonuses and blackjack
Most bonuses count blackjack at 10% or less toward wagering, and some exclude it. If you play mainly blackjack, decline the bonus.
